Crane with operator

Operated crane rental in Monroe, LA

Most crane jobs are rented operated: the crane company sends its own operator to run the lift, so you don't need your own.

Operated vs. bare rental

Operated (often called operated and maintained) means the crane company supplies the crane, its own operator, fuel and maintenance. You're paying for a completed lift, and the operator handles setup and running the crane.

Bare rental means you rent only the machine and supply your own qualified operator. It's less common for cranes, and it usually puts more responsibility, and often more insurance requirements, on you. If you're not sure, ask for operated.

Typical operated crane jobs

  • Setting rooftop HVAC units and generators
  • Placing trusses, beams and precast pieces
  • Lifting equipment into plants and warehouses
  • Setting tanks, transformers and utility components
  • Tree work near structures
  • Loading and unloading heavy freight

What affects the price

  • Crane size, set by the load weight and how far out it has to reach
  • Hours: most operators bill hourly with a minimum, often including travel time
  • Travel or mobilization to the site
  • Extra crew such as a rigger or signal person
  • Overtime for nights, weekends or long days
  • Permits or traffic control for street-side work

Questions

Do I need a lift plan?

Routine lifts usually don't need a formal written plan, but heavy or complex lifts often do. The operator will tell you what your job needs.

Who carries the insurance?

The crane operator carries insurance for their equipment and crew. If your job site requires a certificate of insurance, ask the operator for one before the lift.

Can the operator help rig the load?

Many operators can supply a rigger or signal person. Mention it in your request so it's included in the quote.
